Countdown to DH2 Cap-aton: Favorite Chamber of Secrets Caps — Now that I am older and I understand some of the undertones of the series, this has become one of my favorite moments of the series/CoS. Draco uses the equivalent of a Muggle racial slur to Hermione and Hadgrid tells her that she is capable of doing anything, no matter if she has “dirty blood”. Today someone told me that I was taking an offhand racist comment too seriously (it’s also interesting how I face more racism here than I do in real life — that good ol’ Anon option) and I know that if anyone has ever been on the side of racism knows that the issue is not a light one. Voldemort’s entire battle was not only for power, but for blood purity and you can compare that to Hitler, KKK, other white supremacy groups, and even the challenges faced by the same races in their communities. This series on the front is entertaining, but the depth shouldn’t be ignored. I’m 21 and no one gets to tell me how to feel. I don’t have time for immature and ignorant comments.

Not to mention that Hagrid, being half-giant, also has ‘dirty blood’. He of all people knows what it’s like to be segregated because of your blood (his situation is considerably worse), and there is no way he’ll just sit there while somebody he cares for goes through even a fraction of what he had to withstand. I think he sort of sees a better version of himself in Hermione and as he tells her she can do anything, he tells himself he can too.
